EUFOREA Publication Highlights Priming and Prevention of Asthma
In order to summarize recent research on the prevention of allergies – particularly asthma – and stimulate new activities for future initiatives, a virtual workshop sponsored by EUFOREA and the EAACI Clemens von Pirquet foundation was held in October 2021. The determinants of the “allergic march” as well as the key messages from intervention studies were reviewed by an international faculty of experts. Several unmet needs were identified, and a number of priorities for future studies were proposed.
In this episode, host Dr David Bull is joined by Prof. Erika Von Mutius Professor of Paediatric Allergology and Pulmonology and Head of Asthma and Allergy at the University of Munich, Germany and Prof. Ulrich Wahn, who is a EUFOREA Board Member, and President of the Clemens von Pirquet Foundation & Vice President of the Prevention and Information Network for Allergy and Asthma (PINA eV).
Over the last few years, a significant amount of research has been conducted on the prevention of allergies – particularly asthma. In October 2021, EUFOREA hosted a virtual workshop organized in collaboration with the EAACI Clemens von Pirquet foundation.
The global prevalence of several atopic phenotypes in childhood and adolescence such as atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, asthma and food allergy was initially assessed more than 20 years ago in a large cross-sectional multicentre study. It clearly demonstrated atopy and asthma manifest more frequently during the first years of life and symptoms tend to improve or remit completely over time despite years of persistence.
Often the first sensitisation is induced by food proteins such as cow´s milk and hen´s egg, followed by tree nuts or peanuts in many countries. Differences may depend on regional variations and traditions of infant nutrition.
